TECHNICAL PROCESSING ASSISTANT
General Statement: Under direct supervision of the Technical Processing Coordinator and general supervision of the Library Director, performs a variety of non-professional library work of routine difficulty requiring some specialized knowledge.
Distinguishing Features: The work involves performance of clerical and library specific tasks involving the application of standard library routines which are learned on the job. Work is performed under the supervision of a professional librarian, although employee may work with some independence once procedures are learned.
 
Major Duties:
1)      Prepares library materials for circulation: Type labels, cover books, stamp books, RFID tagging, etc.
2)      Mends damaged library materials.
3)      Sorts incoming mail and takes out current newspapers to display and removes old newspapers to holding area.
4)      Does periodic cleanout of periodicals.
5)      Prepares materials for deletion.
6)      Prepares memorial donation items, including bookplates, and tracks total fulfillment of donation requests.
7)      Other duties as assigned by the Technical Processing Coordinator.
 
Abilities, Skills, and Knowledge:
1)      Knowledge of and interest in books and literature.
2)      Some knowledge of major reference sources and internet databases.
3)      Knowledge of general clerical methods and procedures, including typing and computer skills.
4)      Working ability to learn library classification system and arrangements.
5)      Ability to meet and deal effectively with library patrons and suppliers.
6)      Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
 
Education and Experience:
1)      Certification or demonstrated ability to be certified by the West Virginia Library Commission as Level One Cataloger.
2)      Two years of college is preferred.
3)      A minimum of two years of clerical experience, with computer work involved is preferred.
4)      Experience in public contact work, preferably in a library.
